- Server com problems – Those of you who flew in last weeks regional likely experienced significant com lag once the event got underway. There are theories abound as to why this happens, but it mostly seems the problem is related to user bandwidth problems, not server overload or lag. It appears that if any one particular pilot has a slow connection it can cause the entire system to lag. It may also be related to a particular type of add-on aircraft flown by members not associated with UALR. With this in mind we are requesting that each pilot (1) do a complete shut down of their system – including their network route/modem - before flying in the regional, (2) make sure a virus and malware scan has recently been run on your system, and (3) close all programs not related to BVA, especially one’s requiring significant bandwidth such as napster or other download or streaming audio programs. Let’s see what effect that has on operations this Thursday.
Aside from com problems last weeks event was a nice success. I know a number of pilots were challenged by the zero viz approach to KACK. Watch the next Logan Informer for an article specifically related to the UALR flights and the KACK approach.
- Promotions – There are no new promotions this week. There are however plenty of new candidates and several Flight Officers are in line for promotion to Captain. As soon as that happens we will likely begin to carve UALR up into squadrons operated by a Captain and at least one Flight Officer. The purpose being to improve the span of control of the airline for operational purposes, to allow for de-centralized training of new candidates, and to overall increase the ability of the airline to grow. More on this to follow soon, however the dispatch ticket will start to show squadron assignments as they are made. If you have a special request for a squadron assignment, please let operations know. Also, obviously, if you are ready for your checkride schedule it ASAP. And if not, please contact a company officer for flight training. We would like for UALR to have the most flight officers and captains of any operation on BVA.
- Summer Months – UALR will continue to train, fly and operate during the summer months though it is expected that traffic may be lighter than usual due to camps, vacations, frizbee, girls, beach, et al. UALR operations will work to generate interesting routes and destinations, as well as some special surprises from time to time in order to keep interest up during the summer. But of course, don’t feel obligated to fly. BVA can take over your life. Don’t let it. Leave Vampire Mode, get some sun and fly when you want to. I expect UALR will continue to slowly grow and gain momentum during the summer such that by the time fall rolls around and pilots return from leave the airline they return to will be a juggernaut.
That being said there are a few special events being planned that – if possible – we would ask for all available UALR pilots to fly in. Special events will be announced on skype as much in advance as possible so that plans can be made. One of the events already being planned is a Domestic Journey which happens to fall on a Thursday night. Therefore UALR will take place within the DJ, but will also involve our usual twist on standard procedures. Just to make it extra interesting.
